Re: India/Nepal 6.9 Earthquake...hope you're safe and sound AltheaRose! |
All creatures, it seems, establish priorities and needs 'in case of an emergency'. During tornado season here (which now can be March through September - we always get a few scary days or nights), besides the usual items we keep in the basement like batteries, crank-charged radio/cell phone recharger, blankets, boombox, a few favorite discs, etc., I've got my stash of gin, tonics, wine and smoke. If storms look imminent we grab some dog and cat food, and whatever food looks appealing to us at that time - not always the healthiest, survival-minded options - so the donuts make perfect sense to me. You don't get that advance warning for earthquakes, though, so I can see your son's point in wanting the stash . . . any excuse for storing food in one's bedroom at that age is probably worth his pursuing.
I bet had things been worse in your immediate space, the dogs would have acted differently and been there for you. The times when we've had straight line winds and tornadoes go over, the dogs and cat seem to know when it's time to take cover. they resist any early attempt to head for the cellar - in fact they look at us like we're crazy - but when the old house starts snappin' and howling, they are down the stairs in a flash.
Let's hope there aren't any sizeable aftershocks, and that the search for victims yields a minimum of casualties. take care.
